Types

There are many different wetsuits, ranging from just pants or tops or two-piece wetsuits, to shorties and steamers and even dry suits which completely keep the water out. To know which type of wetsuit you need, you mainly need to look at the environment you will be diving in and the water temperature. In tropical climates and in summer, thermal wear, thinner springsuits and shorties will suffice. In cold waters you'll need at least a 3-6mm suit, but possibly even a 7-9mm suit if you live down south or dive in winter.

It also depends a lot on the type of activity you will be doing. Two-piece wetsuits are better for spearfishing, steamer wetsuits are great for scuba diving and snorkelling because they protects your whole body and keep you warmer for longer, while shorties and springsuits are excellent for active sports such as surfing and water skiing.
